Bhutan is a place known not only for its mountainous beauty, relatively untouched by the outside world, but also for its status as the happiest place in Asia.
Its Gross National Happiness index, which guides the country’s governance focuses on key philosophies such as sustainable development, environmental protection and cultural preservation, all of which have been front and centre in the development of Six Senses latest hotel resort – a collection of five boutique lodges spread over the west and central valleys of the country.
The first three, in Thimphu, Punakha and Paro, opened in March, with Gangtey and Bumthang to follow later in the year.
Designed to give travellers an authentic look inside local culture, Six Senses Bhutan takes inspiration for its spacious interiors from traditional Bhutanese architecture.
The lodges are characterised by simple lines and natural timber furniture. Local elements include the bukharis – traditional wood-burning stoves, and striking vegetable-dyed, antique Himalayan rugs.
As ever in both the development and the running of the lodges, sustainability has been at the heart with active management of energy, water, waste, purchasing and chemical usage.
The Kingdom of Bhutan is a place unlike any other and Six Senses Bhutan, located across some of its lush valley offers its guests true Bhutanese experiences in the lap of luxury, from sunrise meditation and indulgent spa treatments to astrology sessions and butter lamp lighting ceremonies, not to mention the stunning hikes and treks that await in the stunning surrounds.
